From Your Lobbyist: Town Hall talk & healthcare accessibility.
January 29, 2021
Week of Jan 25-29
This Week’s Events:
- Committee Member Assignments: The House Education and Labor Committee and the House Labor Health Human Services and Education (LHHS-Ed) Subcommittee on Appropriations finalized their memberships this week. While new committee assignments tend not to be overly controversial, there is widespread controversy around House Republicans assigning Marjory Taylor Greene to the Ed & Labor Committee due to her actions prior to her election. In 2019, MGT filmed herself harassing our fellow young American David Hoff, advocate of March for Our Lives, claiming the Parkland shooting was just a fake liberal hoax. The issue is not partisan––as several Republican members have stated, her behavior is not reflective of the members that serve on the Education Committee. As of now, it is unclear whether she will be removed from the assignment.
- Healthcare Executive Orders: Over the last few days, President Biden has signed several executive orders that provide greater access to healthcare. one of the orders opens HealthCare.gov, the federal health insurance marketplace, for a special enrollment period from February 15 to May 15, which will allow Americans more time to sign up for health insurance coverage. It also aims to ensure agency rules do not hinder access to health care, including affordability and access for those with pre-existing conditions.
Policies We’re Advocating For:
- Student Debt Cancellation & Higher Ed Reform: AYA, in partnership with our allies Young Invincibles, held a virtual youth town hall meeting where we discussed our policy priorities for the 117th Congress. As expected, student debt cancellation was the topic weighing on everyone’s minds. We explained that there are several paths forward for various levels of student debt cancellation, and that Congress, in addition to providing debt relief, must ensure a comprehensive rewrite of the Higher Education Act is enacted into law to ensure college is more accessible, affordable, and accountable to students in the future. We will be sharing the recording of the town hall across our social channels!
