From Your Lobbyist: Student Debt Cancellation & Public Health.
February 19, 2021
Week of Feb 15-19
This Week’s Events:
- President Biden supports up to $10,000 in student loan debt relief – At a town hall meeting on Tuesday night, President Biden said he would support canceling up to $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower but not the $50,000 that some congressional Democrats support. On Wednesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the President would not take act until the Justice Department reviews whether the President has the authority to issue such an executive action on debt relief, or whether it requires legislation, which is the path the President had previously urged. He said he also supports eliminating interest on federal student loans – which is already the case through September 30.
Policies We’re Advocating For:
- Medicare Exchange Health Plan: This week, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) re-introduced their bill to create a public health option that would provide a lower-cost alternate health insurance option to millions of currently uninsured Americans. AYA believes that healthcare is a human right, and that all young Americans deserve access to affordable, high quality health coverage. While the Affordable Care Act provided continued health insurance coverage for young Americans up to age 26 under their parent’s plans, many young Americans were left out. The new bill would leverage existing Medicare provider networks and cost structures, while extending a lower-cost insurance option for all who wish to purchase it. It is estimated that this bill could potentially expand coverage to up to 5.5 million currently uninsured people.
